15 Ways to Save Energy and Money This Summer

It’s a fact. We’re all continually looking for ways to save energy and money.  That’s why we’ve put together a list of 15 things you can do to help you save energy and money in your home during the summertime.  Some you can quickly (and easily) do today and others require a little more time, effort or planning. Whether you implement some or all of these tips, you’re bound to save a bundle this summer.

1.  Use your microwave: Microwaves are designed specifically for heating liquid (or the liquid contained within food). Its heat waves are not wasted on heating the air or container around your food.  Microwaves use 2 1/3 less energy than the stove.  Better yet, save even more on your electricity bill by using your gas BBQ to grill more meals!

2.  Stop hand washing your dishes: Did you know that your dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand? You can use nearly 5,000 more gallons of water a year if you hand wash your dishes, as opposed to using an Energy Star® qualified dishwasher*. Let dishes air dry to save even more energy.

3.  Replace your inefficient air conditioner: Replacing old cooling equipment with a new, energy-efficient model is the best way to save on energy costs.

4.  Weatherproof your home: Weather-strip, seal, and caulk leaky doors and windows.  It’s possible that more than 20% of air moving through your system is leaking into spaces you do not want cooled.

5.  Look for Energy Star® products: Buy Energy Star® lamp and light fixtures, and replace your incandescent light bulbs that are used more than two hours per day, with Energy Star® compact fluorescent bulbs.

6. Do your windows need to be replaced? If your windows are due for replacement, Energy Star® windows can make your house more comfortable and energy-efficient all year-round.

7.  Not using it? Turn it off. Turn off appliances, light and equipment when not in use. Even doing just this one small thing that we mostly forget about doing, can contribute to savings on annual energy costs.


8.  Wash your clothes in warm or cold water. Do your laundry efficiently by using the warm or cold water setting.  Always use cold water to rinse your clothes.

9. Avoid peak energy times. To save money on your energy bills and to prevent electricity outages, avoid running appliances during peak hours, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m or anytime an electricity emergency is declared.

10. Made in the shade. Install patio covers, awnings, and solar window screens to shade your home from the sun.

11. Install a programmable thermostat. Install a programmable thermostat and you could save up to $180 in energy costs!.

12.  Install a whole house fan in your attic.  On some days, a whole house fan can be used in place of your air conditioner. Whole house fans work by drawing cool air into your home through the windows while forcing hot air out through your attic vents.

13.  Replace your dirty AC filters. Dirty AC filters restrict airflow and can cause the system to run longer, increasing energy use.  Replace filters monthly for maximum benefit.

14.  Use your dryer efficiently. When you need to run the dryer, run full loads only and make sure to clean the clothes dryer lint trap after each use.

15. Give your dryer a rest. Line dry clothes whenever you can.
