SailAhead will participate in the Block Island Race

SailAhead will participate in the Block Island Race aboard the Hussar, a Frers 55 owned by Army Major Jason Mull.

SailAhead's mission is to:

  • Use sailing and the ocean as a therapeutic platform to help heal PTSD suffering veterans
  • Spread PTSD and suicide awareness

Helping those we serve in our community is an important part of what we do. This means getting involved and supporting important local initiatives like SailAhead to help military veterans who bravely served their country.

Based on Long Island, NY, SailAhead is a young, non-profit organization launched in 2013 by brothers Kilian and Sean Duclay when they were 14 and 16 years old. SailAhead uses sailing and the ocean to help military veterans suffering from PTSD. Officially established in June 2016 but actively healing since 2013, SailAhead has taken over 1,000 veterans to the water to help them heal.

Using sailing as a therapy platform, SailAhead invites wounded veterans on their sailboats and shares sailing experiences with them. These veterans become active parts of the sailing team and many continue sailing to become skippers themselves. Some of the veterans sailing are healthy and others suffer from depression, PTSD, brain injuries and so much more. While the SailAhead team and their partners are not medical experts or professionals, they have come to realize just how much the camaraderie and teamwork of sailing, as well as being on the open water, can do to help others coping with PTSD feel better.

Petro Home Services is proud to support this great Long Island organization in their efforts to make lives better for those veterans who gave their all for our country. Everyone on the Petro team is looking forward to further exciting opportunities to support SailAhead, honoring Army Ranger SPC Ryan James Day who ended his life at the age of 21, and more throughout the coming months.

Stay tuned for more updates on SailAhead projects over the next few weeks and to learn how you can help.

About SailAhead

SailAhead uses sailing and the ocean as a therapeutic platform to help veterans heal the scars of war. Since the winter of 2013 SailAhead has helped hundreds of brave men and women suffering from various service related physical disabilities and illnesses including but not limited to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The SailAhead crew of volunteers, skippers and veterans take pride in sailing many types of vessels all year long and in all weather. Veterans are not just tourists on the boats, they are an integral part of the crew. When headed out on their first voyage, veterans all start out as strangers and eventually become sailors through hands-on training. Our commitment to helping disabled veterans does not stop when we arrive on land. SailAhead also provides a family to those who need extra support when experiencing difficult times.

Another mission of SailAhead is to raise PTSD and suicide awareness.
