Home security tips

front of a house

During holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, more than 13 million Americans travel to spend the holiday with friends and family, leaving their homes empty for opportunistic burglars.

To help ensure a worry-free holiday season, and any time you're away from home year round, use these simple, convenient home and travel safety tips to keep your family and home safe:

  • In fall or winter, remove objects that might allow access to your home. For example, ladders for cleaning leaves out of gutters can be used to enter a window or scale a fence.
  • Do not post travel plans on Facebook, Twitter or MySpace letting people know that you will be out of town.
  • Turn your telephone ringer down so no-one outside can hear repeated rings
  • Review your answering machine message to make sure it does not imply that you are away.
  • Make sure to have all mail, newspapers, and deliveries stopped or picked up by a neighbor, friend or relative.
  • Never leave a key hidden outside. Burglars know all the best hiding places.
  • Secure all windows, including those upstairs and reduce the chance of easy entry by cutting tree limbs away from second-story windows.
  • Have a friend move your car occasionally if it is parked in the driveway.
  • Use timers to operate lights.
  • Make sure your yard is well lit at night.
  • Ask police if they have a “vacation home check” program. If they do, ask them to check while you are away.
  • Have mail, newspapers and other delivered items picked up or held until your return.
  • Even while at home, it pays to be smart. If you purchase any big ticket items like new electronics, break down boxes that may indicate what you bought and use trash bags to dispose of them to avoid criminals finding out what new items may be inside your home.
  • Have a home security system installed that includes a 24-hour fire monitoring service that automatically dispatches the fire or police department.
  • Consider installing a Web-based home security system that allows you to check on your home while away and even arm and disarm your system from any laptop, cell phone, PDA or other Web-enabled devices.

Please also use these tips to avoid any home-cooking or other fires in your home:

  • Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency, and teach your family how to use it.
  • Be cautious when using turkey fryers as they pose a number of distinct safety concerns, including burn and fire hazards.
  • Never wear loose fitting clothing when cooking. Long, open sleeves could ignite and catch fire from a gas flame or a hot burner. Wear short, close fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.
  • Take advantage of security systems which includes a FREE smoke or carbon monoxide detector.

Security facts and the importance of protecting your family and home.
If you're thinking about a home security system, it's a very smart decision. The facts to support installation are very compelling:

  • In 2008, over 2.1 million were burglaries were reported1 – that’s 4 burglaries occurring every minute and 1 burglary every 15 seconds
  • Most burglaries involve some sort of forced entry
  • Homes without monitored security systems actually have 5 times the risk of burglary than those that do2

Avoid becoming one of these statistics by taking action today.

We can help. Install a home security system which can monitor smoke detectors from its 24-hour monitoring center, and enjoy peace of mind that you’re protecting what’s important to you, whether you’re home or away.
